When you think of soulful Country singers, one name that is quick to come to mind is that of T. Graham Brown. Becoming a radio presence in the late 1980s, with such songs as “Hell And High Water” and “I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again,” Brown has never been one to hide his affinity for Rhythm & Blues. That love is apparent on his new album, which finds “His T-Ness” visiting some of his favorite songs of all time.
Credit Brown for not trying to make these songs his own, as he sounds like he is having a blast on records like “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” His take on Stevie Wonder’s “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” is particularly moving. It’s not all classics, though. There are some newer tunes on The Present, like the stirring title cut which showcases his spiritual side. “As If You Didn’t Know” shows a romantic side of the singer, as does “I’m Expecting Miracles.”
Just like a fine wine, some things get better with age….and T. Graham Brown is one of those. The Present is exactly what it says it is, a present of great music to us all!
